I Heard a Bird is based on a well known and loved music round called “Ah, Poor Bird.” I was using the round in rehearsal one day and a student says, “It seems like there should be more to this (meaning the round).” I did a little research, found the text for “I Heard a Bird” and started working. It blends together elements that work effectively to help teach part-singing to young or new singers, but has enough contrast and homophonic singing to hold your more experienced singers.
