Musically based on the Irish folk melody “Londonderry Air,” the lyrics for Danny Boy were written in 1910 by (surprisingly) an English lawyer named Frederic Weatherly. Weatherly’s sister-in-law, who was Irish, introduced him to the aforementioned folk melody and Weatherly went about adapting his poem to fit “Londonderry Air.”
This arrangement was first penned in 2010 and honors my Irish heritage. My great-uncle, Jim Driscoll, was a proud Irishman and loved all things associated with that heritage- St. Patrick’s Day, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame University and of course, Irish music.
