The Call was commissioned for the 2023 Iowa Choral Directors Association Opus Honor Choir Festival. The composition was requested by Abby Sheppard, that years 7/8 Treble Clef Opus Honor Choir Director and a close friend of mine. She needed a piece to fill out her program that was atypical of many treble voice pieces, which are often slow and lyrical. This piece has interesting harmonic elements that should challenge singers, but I hope the attention to voice leading will prove that dissonances are musically gratifying.
